Museale antike Yoruba Ife Bronzebüste – Nigeria (Kotalla TL-Analyse)

A museum-quality, highly exclusive art object for discerning collectors and high-end interiors: This monumental bronze sculpture depicts the head of a ruler (Oba) from the historical Ife culture (Yoruba). Cast using the heavy lost-wax casting process (cire perdue), this distinctive piece, standing approximately 36.5 cm tall and weighing over 3700 g, impresses with its fine, naturalistic detail and immense sculptural presence. In the high-end international design and art market, this fully verified object represents a sound investment.

The Kotalla Certificate:

Unique personal provenance
In the anonymous art market, trust is paramount. To guarantee absolute transparency and the highest level of security, this bronze was personally delivered to Ralf Kotalla’s world-leading specialist laboratory for scientific analysis. The original thermoluminescence analysis certificate (TL), included with the piece and numbered 01R120626, attests to the age of the inner clay core being approximately 90 years old, with a scientific tolerance of +/- 45%.

The mathematical upper limit of the test window includes a period of up to 130 years, placing the object in the turn of the 20th century (c. 1896–1936). This scientifically substantiated age structure makes the piece an extremely rare, early work of African modernism in the premium segment.

Iconography & Symbolism of Ife Culture

The three-dimensional execution displays the unmistakable insignia of classical Ife art, renowned worldwide for its unique naturalism:

The ceremonial crown.

A towering, intricately braided and textured hairstyle that tapers to a point and symbolizes the divine power of the ruler. Ritual Scarification: The entire face is covered with fine, parallel vertical lines—the classic ideal of beauty and status at the royal court of Ife.

The Openwork Neck: The stylized, textured neck area displays the typical grooves traditionally used for attaching figures to wooden supports during funeral ceremonies.

Museum-Grade Condition Report:

The bronze is in superb, absolutely authentic original condition. It boasts a magnificently aged, golden-brass patina. Fascinating greenish malachite oxidation has formed over generations in the deep relief structures and within the interior. As a true handcrafted masterpiece, the casting exhibits historically highly desirable characteristics: characteristic casting anomalies, minor surface pores (porosity), and manufacturing-related microcracks. The hollow interior also visibly preserves the remains of the original core material used for Kotalla’s age determination.

Provenance & Scientific Expertise:

To fully document the absolute authenticity and historical age of this important Ife head, the object was personally transported by Black Forest Curator to the world-renowned Kotalla Laboratory in Haigerloch for examination. Ralf Kotalla himself physically handled the bronze bust, inspected the piece, and personally took the material sample for analysis. The subsequent independent thermoluminescence analysis (TL test) confirms the findings.

The official original certificate (test report no. 01R120626) will be provided to the buyer upon purchase.

Note on Provenance & Cultural Heritage Protection:

This object is a scientifically certified work of art from the early 20th century. The accompanying thermoluminescence (TL) laboratory certificate definitively establishes a casting age that places the object outside of restrictive historical categories or restitution issues. The piece fully complies with the German Cultural Property Protection Act (KGSG) and international trade guidelines. It originates from a long-standing European private collection and is freely available for sale and international shipping.
