Walter Lewy (1905-1995, Dortmund, Germany) was a Brazilian painter and illustrator of German descent, best known for his surrealist and symbolic visual language. Forced to flee Nazi persecution, he emigrated to São Paulo in 1938, where he developed a rich body of work blending dreamlike imagery, spiritual connotations, and botanical references. A self-taught artist, Lewy produced paintings, drawings, and graphic works often featuring fantastical figures, anthropomorphic forms, and abstract landscapes. His early training in lithography and illustration influenced the precision of his compositions. In Brazil, he participated in major exhibitions, including the São Paulo Biennials (1951, 1960, 1965, 1969), and organized retrospectives at the MAM-SP. Today, Lewy is recognized as a key figure in Brazilian surrealism and the art of exile.

Walter Lewy (1905-1995, Dortmund, Deutschland) war ein brasilianischer Maler und Illustrator deutscher Abstammung, der vor allem für seine surrealistische und symbolistische Bildsprache bekannt ist. Auf der Flucht vor der Verfolgung durch die Nazis emigrierte er 1938 nach São Paulo, wo er ein reichhaltiges Werk schuf, in dem sich traumhafte Bilder, spirituelle Konnotationen und botanische Bezüge vermischen. Als Autodidakt schuf Lewy Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Grafiken, die häufig fantastische Figuren, anthropomorphe Formen und abstrakte Landschaften zeigen. Seine frühe Ausbildung in Lithografie und Illustration beeinflusste die Präzision seiner Kompositionen.
