An exceptional Chinese Hetian jade cup carved in the form of a blossoming lotus, surrounded by water birds, fishes, and curling stems in high relief. The soft celadon-white stone has a luminous translucency and silky polish, giving depth and harmony to the sculptural composition. The carver’s skill is evident in the natural flow of the design, where every leaf and petal seems to move gently around the vessel.
Long associated with purity and abundance, the lotus was a favourite motif among scholar-artists of the Qing period. This substantial piece, weighing 818 g, would have been admired as both an object of contemplation and a display of material perfection.
